odd issue with gas pedal. linkage fell off and it went to the floor. weird set up

why on earth do they have that alloy box shaped thing attached to the top of the pedal? could figure out what keeps it from coming off the pedal. fabricated a spring clip to hold the bushing thing in the hole on top of the pedal. did they have a clip on there, or was it some kind of a press fit that has worn? got it working fine, but just wonder how it is supposed to work. awful place to try and get your hands up into.
