ahhhh, vwtool wont run on win7 pro and you don't like MS VM or xp
mode....no worries...

1st download sun virtualbox (not open source version as has no USB
pass-through!!!!) install it and load xp pro or even win98 from iso
image or bootable flash, drive, external media drive, etc. to make a
new vw machine. whatever my netbook is sans cd/dvd media drive but I
have msdn licence to get all the .iso's

Already have a vm hard disk from MS vw? yes you can use this in
virtualbox but you will have to register windows again when you boot
it up in sun vb:( still saves a step in my csse. w/o xp mode install,
etc. MS VM has no USB/serial, etc. support so yeah that's why go get
the latest version of vb for your OS but not the OS ver as
mentioned...got it?

2nd. Install the USB pass through driver, If you have it going with
vagcom on win7 already the host side should be setup. install the
driver on the virtual machine go through the hoops of the driver
install. I got some errors but kept persisting and updating xp vm and
kept on at it until I saw this on the vb xp machine. 1st good sign!

ahhhhh-haaaa! It shows up. At this point next time you have this xp
virtual machine off you may want to go into the main settings and map
the usb/serial device full time (can't do that when it is running)

3rd map your com port in vwtool as normal (at this point I already
checked DEV Mngr it went to COM3 for this device)

4th enjoy vwtool on win7 via virutal xp machine that you can use for
anything else you want and restore it to how it was when you got this
all working!

get the point yet? It just works....

YOu want more????? you greedy bastard.... I did :)
5) RDP/vnc, etc. into it and run it from your phone or whatever. The
netbook has almost 9 hours full time probably more like days on
sleep/standby and only running vm and vwtool. but you can alway put
power to it and UPS it mode to net boot it up, etc. to make it full
time. it is tiny and cheap, and they make cheaper models. thinking on
putting a laptop in full time stealth like so I can net boot it from
phone and have vag-com/vwtool, lemiwinks, etc., etc. right phone (wifi
or vpn, or you name it!).....anyway proof of concept that you can do
pretty much full management from phone is done for well under 300
bucks plus you get a full easy to remove car computer out of
it....small enough to mount and use! Anyway...

upstairs now over www via verizon ISP then through vpn to that netbook phone has wifi too and tested that 1st works like a charm both ways. ummmmm, yeahhhh poor mans non-star :)

*****more pics of messing around while setting it up on 1st car for testing, still need a mount for that but with track ball and in drivers seat works pretty well for temp use...would love to mount it and power it from car long term.
