as soon as a I bent it that is. All of the insulation was melted off. I honestly have no idea how the car was still running.

Replacement is simple and straight forward I guess. I could describe in more detail but essentially you only have to customize two things- you need to make your own ground connection and solder a wire to the J272 relay inside the ECU box.
