They can be purchased for very little money on e-bay.

Also, the cam timing adjuster assembly can wear out and oscillate on startup creating a tremendous racket. They are NOT so cheap. Crank the engine with the covers off and if one of them is bobbing up and down, then the retaining pin is not holding the plungers steady until oil pressure builds. This hammers the plastic shoes and can cause jumped timing or a chain jam that causes the timing belt to skip or break.

Add some high detergent oil intended for diesel engine or a quart of ATF, and that will help dissolve any deposits, but I doubt that is the problem.
