Since I had the Pearl S8 on the lift for some routine maintenance, (oil change, brake pad warning light fix, dead rear o2 sensor, worn tie rod end, parking brake adjustment, straight pipe install, etc), I decided to confront my louder than "normal" rattle from Bank 1 on startup. While the rattle does go away after a few seconds, I knew this "rattle" was not normal. (my other S8 is pretty quiet on startup, similar mileage).

Removed valve cover to take a look at the tensioner/pads. At first glance upper pad appears to be okay.


Oh wait, what's that??? That looks out of place, right ;)


Tensioner tool installed, ready to remove intake cam and tensioner.
BTW I did not loosen exhaust cam, I was able to wiggle out the intake cam.


This explains "louder than normal" rattle on startup. Looks like the lower pad broke a long time ago. (no detectable grooves on the broken off part).

"New" tensioner/pads and intake cam back in place. Marks lining up. Hoping for quiet startup's and smooth sailing for the foreseeable future.
