Help needed coolant pipe on 32v 98 A8Q 4.2l oil cooler

Got cooler removed ok and new seals and matrix gasket installed. Got cooler back into its spot but am really struggling getting the rear coolant pipe installed. I fought it for 4 hours but cannot get it to go back in to cooler. Does anyone have any MacGyver ideas.
What holds the pipe in place? It seems to not be perfectly rigid and has some lateral movement.
I tried to use an inspection camera but just cant see the alignment problem. What's the word on removing the exhaust manifold for better viewing? This looks like it can't be done without removing the cooler.
