Had a '73 Dart which would start and sputter, die if you gave it the pedal. Replaced the fuel filter, that was it. And as for diesel, then there was the clogged filter on my 1982 300SD. It literally acted like a horsepower limiter, with no other discernible effects. That's a fully mechanical diesel, though.
