If your dash makes a funny sound then you have a bad servo or CCM

There's a grip of climate control servos in the system. They don't contain any intelligence, so it takes five wires to run them (three for the potentiometer, two for the motor.) The climate control module contains the motor drivers and the electronics to read the servo position. Audi in its wisdom used a crap foam tape that gets gummy before it turns to dust, and glues vent doors shut. At this point one of three things happens: The servo strips itself internally, the fragile plastic piece between the D-shaped metal servo shaft and the door breaks, or the motor driver in the Climate Control Module dies.

The CCM can probably fail in other ways as well, like becoming unable to read the position of a servo.

The first step is to scan the climate control module. Any scanner that can read five digit codes from the CCM will help you here. If you do not have at least a cheap eBay USB cable yet, you are Doing It Wrong. They are like fifteen bucks and will do almost everything the real VAG-COM will do. Except what, adaptation maybe? You can also get a cheap $15 handheld scanner which will pull the five digit codes, but it won't get them from the climate control -- only from the other major modules (PCM, TCM, ABS, SRS) so what you really want is the USB cable.
