This is probably a good link since it includes the really telling point... "conventional starter motors and 12V DC generators are no longer regarded as strategic." Basically every vehicle will soon be a 48V mild hybrid (if it's not more hybrid than that, or a pure EV.) The belt-driven starter/generator replaces both of those things, and Bosch doesn't care any more than Audi about maintaining these old vehicles. There's no real profit to be made on those parts since they've been commoditized.
Anyway, I guess I'm going to keep my spare starter and alternator for as long as I keep my A8, so I can rebuild and swap at need... Not that this was not the plan already
