Yes, it's red. I don't know for certain, but I doubt the trans function is affected by the dye. The Valvoline Product Info data sheet (I got it at https://sharena21.springcm.com/Public/Document/18452/9e447451-fe75-e711-9c10-ac162d889bd3/3fa3136a-09bd-e711-9c12-ac162d889bd1) says it's "suitable for use in" ... "Audi/VW G-055-025-A2, G-052-162-A1/A2, G-052-990-A2, G-055-005-A2, G-055-162-A6, G-055-540-A2, G-060-162-A2, G-052-025-A2, G-052-162-A1". The G-052-162 fluid is called out in the ZF (trans manufacturer) document "List of lubricants TE-ML 11" for "4HP20, 5HP19, 5HP19FL (1), 5HP19FLA (2), 5HP19HL (1), 5HP19HLA (2),5HP24, 5HP24A (2)" The 5HP24A is the trans in our D2 A8 Quattros. The A1/A2/A6 suffix is the size of the trans fluid bottle/drum.

I got it for $26 for a gallon at Advance, and Wal-Mart has it for $18 last time I checked.
