No arcing/sparking during alternator replacement. Cleaning the connectors didn't change anything.

Not sure what else to troubleshoot - since the car seems to reboot as if the battery was totally disconnected, maybe it's something in the ignition switch? The clock totally resets and the trip meter reverts back to whatever the mileage was when this all started (291 miles).

Could it be that some computer isn't getting power to retain these memory settings when I turn the car off? All the fuses are good. However, when I have the battery connected, everything works as it is supposed to (seats can be moved, alarm works, etc.)

yes I know I need a Bentley manual. :-(
