invest in a cheap ebay cable, at minimum. better than nothing. will let you do some feature but not others, e.g. recoding and output tests work ok but adaptation won't, IIRC.

especially if you've had leaks in the past inspect the harness for physical damage, around the back of the motor. (fun!) I also had damage to wiring next to the lid of the e-box, that was a crap cable layout for sure.
