For starters, D3 puts front diff in front of torque converter as first Audi of now current design to reduce front overhang some. D2 would be the old set up of front diff being behind torque converter. Linkage set up and controls pretty different too, let alone all the ECU and TCU mating. TCU also internal to a D3 tranny, while inside passenger compartment in a D2/C5.
