I got a glass canopy hood because that's what my wife wanted. So I found one that cleared a respectable CFM while still having a decent noise output. I seem to recall that it clears 600cfm, but when I found it on the company's website recently (under "discontinued models") it said that it only clears 420cfm. Regardless, I almost never use it on the high setting. So for my consumer range, with about 45k BTU, it does the job just fine, even on low.

The height above the range also matters. Larger hoods with bigger fans can be mounted higher for more clearance. Lower CFM hoods should be mounted lower.
