Roof = Ridge vents + soffit vents - gable vents?

My brother is getting estimates for a new roof now and we had ours done a couple of years ago. He is being told that for best performance, he should go with ridge vents at the top and soffit vents at the bottom edges of the roof, and to close up the existing gable vents.

We had ridge vents installed as part of our new roof, and we have soffit vents front and back. But we were never advised to close up the gable vents. So my question is, what are your thoughts on this? Should we have the existing triangular gable vents at the top corners of our attic space closed off to enhance the airflow / heat draw through the attic space?
