Softening does indeed add sodium to the treated water. But, sodium alone is not salt..

The chlorine in the NaCl used to regenerate the softener combines with the calcium and magnesium forced off the ion exchange beads. That is flushed to the drain.

The article you referenced talks only about sodium.
