The scraper is actually meant to scrape along the driveway. If it doesn't melt and gets packed down, it can turn to ice. There's also the issue of the snow getting driven on before I can clear it.

I live in MA and I've had the same snowblower for 18 years. At this point I have a pretty good feel for the type of conditions that lead to ice on the driveway. I've also always set the scraper at the same height and never had a problem. In fact it's the original scraper bar.
