room first. It's not a public area and if the results are not as aesthetically pleasing as you like, then it's ok since it's not a public space.

As others have said, a decoupling membrane is preferred since you have plywood floors. Check out a few books from the library and or visit the John Bridge forums online. The more prepared you are, the more comfortable you will be.
