and the hitch with that is many PCMs do not always complete their self tests. this is especially true in the cold.

eg - in Whitehorse we regularly see 40 below. the ambient air temp thermistor on your Ford will give a signal to the PCM outside of self-test range at this temperature, but that doesn't mean that it's faulty. it wont set a circuit high or circuit low PCM trouble code. instead it will trigger a P1000 - readiness test not yet complete.

in this example you can drive around all day at -40 and put on as many miles as you please. until all of the requirements the PCM needs to complete its readiness are complete you will always have that P1000.

your best bet is to get an ultra cheap $20 code reader. as soon as it no longer registers P1000 you are good to go.
