But... Should the price of gas go up (being a limited resource and all), or the cost of batteries go down (Musk is building a factory dedicated to just batteries and improving the technology) then he wins.

Tesla guarantees the batteries for 8 years, so even if it takes $10K to replace the batteries at that time I think it's still a win, depending on how much you drive of course. Let's not forget that this is a 400hp car, and running its gas equivalent for 8 years would not be cheap.

You also have to figure that running an electric car avoids a lot of the maintenance cost for engine and transmission on regular cars.

And the beauty of electric is that energy can come from many different sources, not just ancient fossils, so you potentially have a choice of whatever is the cheapest fuel available in the future.
