If you don't see smoke out the exhaust and no oil is leaking out around the oil fill or PCV then the block is not getting over-pressurized by a bad ring or piston. I just got done with my 4th head replacement and yes, I can do them in my sleep. If you can find the space to work on it, you could order a replacement head and knock it out in a weekend, then send yours back as a core once the car is running. I'd be willing to give you a hand and guidance doing the swap.
