If you're talking about Boston proper, like Charlestown, Southie, JP, Brighton, etc., yes, it is expensive and crowded. Parking can be a crapshoot unless it is off street.

IMO, cost is definitely cheaper than NYC. What are you looking for? How much SF? How much land do you want? If you're looking for a place for a 1 yr fellowship, then it sounds like you're renting. Archstone has a complexes with 1 BR units for around $2K. IMO, not stupid expensive.

Commute...yeah, the burbs can suck, but there are towns within 30 min and still under $1mm. newton, waltham, watertown, arlington, belmont, lexington are some towns within roughly 30 min of Boston.

Born and raised in Boston...yeah, I'm an asshole :)
