doing a road trip to Leavenworth from SLC. any places to stop along the way?

planning to do this around next month for the Christmas festivities. since it's a long road trip, i was thinking about breaking up the drive, spending the night in Boise on the way there. on the way back, was wondering if there is another place enroute where we could spend the night. also, depending on how much time we have, i would like to see other things. what are some suggestions of places to see/things to do, in and near Leavenworth and surroundings. how about passing through Oregon, any stops I should know of?
