It cleans at start up an shut down (parameter I have set) and has been so effective that with 1.2 million frames through one in 1 year and 4 months, it's needed traditional cleaning twice.

My other D800's are 2 and 5 months old and have never needed cleaning yet.

With a D3s, you cleaned every time you took it out.
