New guy questions...

Wife wants a DSLR and some lenses. I know nothing about it. Not even joking, not a thing.

Soooo, she tinkered with the Nikon and liked the menu setup relative to the Canon.

Will be used for shooting kids, some nature (me when i head to the mountains) and sports.

Recommendations on a camera and lens? Maybe a combo? $500-$800 get it done or do I need to get into spending a grand?
