they can get damaged, fortunately they are cheap and easy to replace. Even with motor installed you can replace them by just removing the coolant res. But the car simply will not start if it's broken.

But yea, both methods suck to some extent. I pulled both mine together, and I had to rent a trans jack to mate them back, the trans on these cars is a heavy SOB and aligning them was impossible without it.
