So my car overheated yesterday evening on the way home from the grocery store. Local roads. No speeds over 25 mph. Coolant temp warning in trip computer flashes 200 yards from home. Pull into driveway and steam coming from underhood and coolant dripping out what I assumed was the overflow. No coolant seen in reservoir so I grabbed a bottle and opened up the reservoir top. Bad idea. Didn't notice what the coolant gauge read, but bubbling coolant reappears and sprays over section of engine before I can reclose it.
I leave it until today. I figure the themostat kicked the bucket, but for good measure today I replaced the coolant temp sensor and topped off the coolant. No drips seen under-car so went to start the car to get the coolant flowing and get out air bubbles.
Car starts up immediately, but I hear some big rattling and realized I left a wrench on top of the engine so I shut the car off immediately and remove the tool.
Now car won't start at all. It cranks and cranks, but doesn't fire up. I see the CEL on so pulled codes and there are G40 & G163 Camshaft Position Sensor Implausible Signal, Intermitant codes.
I saw that there was coolant on the driver's side cam position sensor and harness plug as well as the G28 Engine Speed Sensor plug under the coolant reservoir. I wipe up as much as I can and spray some electronics cleaner onto the plugs to try and get rid of any coolant remnants.
Still just cranks.
Is it that my cylinder / plugs are wet with gas and I need to give it some time to dry out? Or could the spraying coolant when I opened the reservoir have messed up some wiring? Or could my timing have jumped a tooth somehow (never seen these codes before, but worst fear for fubar'd engine)?
I cleared the codes and they didn't return when trying to start, but not sure if the engine needs to actually get running before they might reappear, if there is an actual cam position problem.
Thoughts? I was going to have it checked out anyway for the thermostat, but now it looks like it's going to need a flatbed to get to the shop. :(
