could substitute plain wires if you connect them right. Igor recently described the wiring in his '97, leaving only the 2X2 end.

Some of the Chinese plugs on ebay need trimming to fit in the tight OBDII receptacles on some vehicles (A4 is one) but otherwise operate identically to the $50 Audi part.
