having been traveling abroad quite a bit the last 2 years (10 & counting), for the shorter trips, just gauge the bit of spending money you'll use at the smaller shops ... and then use the Chipped CC for the bigger spending.

If you're in need of more, just pull what you need again from a local ATM.

Worst is you pay a small one time ATM fee to withdraw the local currency. To me, that'd be better than being stuck with leftover Euro's especially with the stronger USD.

Would not recommend carrying USD over ... the places to actually exchange physical cash (hotel front desk, airport, local money changers) all have horrific rates.
